A Hunger Games Birthday Party: Kid Friendly of Course
With the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 premier on the horizon it only seems fitting that I finally blog a few details of my oldest daughters Hunger Games themed birthday party!
Yes she chose the theme.
Yes I love her even more for her awesome taste in movies.
The party concluded with our ownHunger Games Nerf War with targets, extra nerf bullets, obstacles, and plenty of tributes from the surrounding Districts neighborhoods. The photos of the games were not posted to protect the innocent. :)
Enjoy the inspiration, we will now be counting down the days until we see the final movie! Can't wait!

Katniss Everdeen inspired my kid and my kid inspired me.
Now that the Mockingjay Madness is once again arising for the final installment of the beloved Hunger Games series, I decided its about dang time that I blog one of my most favorite sessions to date.
Well....maybe I'm a little biased because this little Katniss Everdeen happens to be my little lady! She admires the strength of Katniss and very adamantly requested a Hunger Games themed 5th birthday party. What kind of mom would I be to say no?? I get sick of the pink princess birthday decorations so this was an exciting theme to chase after!
So off on a woodsy jaunt we went with a homemade bow and arrow in hand, side braid, and trusty mockingjay pin displayed proudly on her jacket.
I love my kid so very much, her and her little sister inspire me to no end. Enjoy!

Perspectives of Photography Seminar: Day 1
Oh, hello. I won't even attempt to make excuses for my long hiatus from blogging.
To be honest I haven't been shooting a whole lot, but its okay! No, I'm not quitting photography. I'm just re-evaluating my approach to my work and it also goes along with my personal life.
The goal: Simple. Minimal. Quality over Quantity.
I don't want to produce hundreds of frames per session anymore. I want to focus on singular pieces that will be appreciated on their own... or paired but most importantly....appreciated!
So while on my break to re-evaluate I decided to attend the annual Pittsburg State University seminar: Perspectives of Photography. I've never actually gone to a workshop or seminar for photography before so this was a little bit of a leap for me to do alone (I know lame it was only an hour away in Pittsburg, but still!) I grabbed my bag, booked my first hotel room alone for the first time and enjoyed the break from my everyday routine.
The first course I attended, "The Psychology of Sales in Photography" was probably my favorite course from the entire seminar. Hosted by David and Whitney Scott of Whitney Scott Photography [See their work here], the pair casually talked with us about how we can serve our clients in the best way possible. No, none of us are sales people, shocker. We are awkward artists that just want to make you feel things, so we didn't walk out of there ready to intimidate our clients into submission, but instead ready to make our clients experience a smooth ride. I could have listened to them all weekend to be honest, but then again David and Whitney are a husband and wife duo with little ones so I feel like I could relate to them on that level. :D
My second course was a Fine Art Photography shoot with Brian DeMint. [See Brian's work here] Brian is known for his mixed media, overlay, style, of fine art photography and it was a pleasure to work with him and see how his process develops as he prepares for a shoot. Brian usually prepares his models himself, creating head pieces and gowns on the fly with whatever supplies he can find.
Overall the seminar went well and it certainly lit a fire in me to expand my horizons and try something even bigger in the the upcoming year. Maybe something that will challenge me creatively even more...we shall see.
In the mean time, enjoy my shoot with Brian DeMint from Day 1 of the seminar. I ADORE the way some of these turned out, with a gritty emotional feel.

two of the seminar was simple for me, I participated in a Senior
Photography shoot located on campus at the Tech center and downtown
Pittsburg, instructed by Tonya Tomory of Expressions Exposed
Photography. Compared to day one this shoot was very tame, but it was a
welcome break after pushing the creative juices so hard!

Calvin | Senior 2015
Welcome another senior to the blog, Calvin! Calvin came to me for his senior portrait session right at the beginning of Neewollah this year (so forgive me for the delay and in sharing this goodness!). I was the perfect time of year for his shoot and the locations they chose suited the season just right.
Most senior boys tend to be a bit more serious and getting a smile out of them can be work...Calvin however had an impossible time being serious which guaranteed a genuine laugh every time I requested a somber expression. Thank you Calvin and Lisa for choosing me to be his senior photographer. Your session turned out perfect and it was a pleasure to work with you both!

Tate | Senior 2015
I'm back! I've been waiting to blog some fant-abulous sessions for a while now and it's time to catch up! Are you ready? Kaygo....
Today I get to share with you my first senior session in a loonnnnnnng time. Tate is a senior at Independence High School this year and has a handsome sense of style and love for basketball.
Basically he made this really easy on me...
Aside from that he was willing to let me get a little creative with smoke bombs and a small hike down a hill for some beach side goodness at sunset. His session turned out perfect for what I had in mind and now I'm pretty certain that senior boys might be the easiest subjects to photograph.
